Selcuk, Turkey — Turkish fire fighters and emergency workers have contained a large forest fire near the ancient city of Ephesus inTurkey´s western Aegean region.
The fire, which broke out late Sunday, burnt out more than 250 hectares of forest land near the ancient city. Turkish authorities used 10 helicopters, two fire fighting planes and small aircraft to pour water on the fire, and another close to the nearby town of Aydin.
More than one thousand tourists had to be evacuated when the flames from the Ephesus fire came close to the peak of a hill overlooking the city, the site of the house reputed to have been the last home of the Virgin Mary.
