Bray, Ireland — Up to 200 Bord na Móna workers and the emergency services are continuing efforts to put out a series of fires across peat land in counties Offaly, Westmeath and Longford.
The most serious of the fires has been brought under control but continues to burn in the Mountdillon Bord na Móna works in Co Longford.
Last night, hundreds of tonnes of milled peat were destroyed in the blaze at Derryhaun near the village ofKeenagh.
A string of sporadic fire across the three counties saw machinery burned out and local roads closed.
Bord na Móna workers said the blazes were the worst in the region since the 1970s and the increase in wind conditions was hampering efforts to put out the flames.
