Bhutan — About 10 acres of chirpine forest above the Dechenphodrang Monastic School was destroyed by a forest fire which started around 12:30 pm today.
The fire was brought under control around 2:30 pm by forest personnel, volunteers and members of the armed forces.
The monks from the Dechenphodrang Monastic School played a vital role in controlling the fire since they were the first to reach the fire site, said the Thimphu divisional forest officer.
According to the officer, the fire started when a woman lit a small bonfire outside her house, near Dechenphodrang.
I had started the fire to heat water to take bath and wash my clothes, said the woman.
She was then inside her house when the strong afternoon wind helped the fire to spread along the hill below the monastic school.
