Veld fires in the Nelson Mandela Metropole have burnt at least five shacks to the ground. Firefighters spent last night battling flames in the Rocklands and Greenbushes areas on the outskirts of Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage.
The fires reached Gunguluza informal settlement at Uitenhage’s KwaNobuhle township, where they levelled five shacks. The local Red Cross says it has found temporary accommodation for about 30 people left homeless by the fire.
There are no fires raging in the area this morning.
