Thailand — Despite forest fires not being a severe problem in Phuket, Official from Phuket Forest Fire control unit Pornchai Sittikesorn said his office has been keeping a close watch and control of possible incidents as the island is now in the dry season.
Two operation teams are divided and assigned into two major areas; with one team working in Muang and Thalang district while another is covering Kathu district in prone locations for forest fires.
Most forest fires in Phuket occurred due to people he pointed out.
His unit also conducts public awareness campaigns in forest fire prevention and seeks public cooperation as well as sets up networks for the campaigns.
Just last week the Phuket Vice Governor Nirun Kalayanamitra opened an anti forest fire campaign for 2006 at Layan Beach in Cheong Thale sub-district of Thalang.
