New Zealand — There are fears that a serial arsonist has struck again in Whangarei
A fire blazed over four hectares of native forest at Quarry Gardens in Kensington, near State Highway One, on Thursday night. Three helicopters with monsoon buckets were used to contain the flames.
It is the fifth fire in the area this year and police believe it was deliberately lit.
“Volunteers have put alot of effort into the area to turn it into a garden and the fires in the area has damaged a considerable amount. Its quite frustrating, and the costs are starting to mount,” says Chief fire officer Kevin Ihaka.
A man has been detained and is being questioned about the blaze.
