A pilot died when his water-dumping plane crashed into a hill while fighting a small forest fire on the island of Mallorca, officials said today.
The cause of Sundays crash was not immediately known. The weather was clear at the time of the accident and the terrain was not particularly rough, according to the regional government of the Balearic islands.
The pilots death raised to 14 the number of firefighters killed while on duty this summer in Spain, enduring its worst drought on record.
The single worst incident was the death of 11 firefighters trapped by a huge blaze in central Guadalajara province in late July.
