Forest Fires Prime Due To Dry Conditions

There were 14 new forest fires confirmed yesterday in the East Fire Region.

They are as follows: 2 each for Chapleau, Parry Sound, Sudbury, Timmins and Kirkland Lake and 1 each for Hearst, Cochrane, Sault Ste Marie and Wawa.

Air attack was required on several of the fires as a result of the forest fuels the fires were burning in and the active behaviour the fires were displaying.

Cut wood was lost from two of the fires. Out of the 14 fires, 9 were lightning caused, 4 were person caused and the remaining 1 is currently being investigated.

The forest fire hazard has started to climb once again as a result of the hot dry weather that has moved into most parts of the region.

The MNR would like to advise the public to use extreme caution when burning in a high forest fire hazard. Several municipal fire bans have been implemented. Please check with your local municipal office or fire department for more information.

Since April 1st, there have been 362 forest fires in the East Fire Region – 212 of which have been person caused.
