Volunteers will assist National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and private landholders with a number of hazard reduction burns over the next week, weather permitting.
Burns are planned for the Blue Mountains, Cooma Monaro, Eurobodalla, Greater Taree, Muswellbrook and Wingecarribee local government areas. They range from small strategic burns to larger, highly visible burns such as 1100ha in the Tinderry Nature Reserve.
Hazard reduction burns are used to clear undergrowth and ground fuels in strategic areas of bushland, particularly around the urban interface. This work can assist in reducing the intensity of a bushfire should it occur in these areas.
Hazard reduction is just one element of bushfire management. Landowners and managers play a part by preparing their properties for the fire season by undertaking hazard reduction work such as mowing, trittering, slashing and well organised burning if required.
The RFS can provide advice on how to undertake hazard reduction and what permits and approvals might be required. RFS staff can provide free environmental assessment to private property owners.
