Russian Federation: Fires Destroy 357,000 Hectares of Forest in Russia’s Far East 2002

A total of 94 forest fires having an area of 78,000 hectares have been registered in Russia’s Far East, the regional centre of the Emergency Situations Ministry said Wednesday. The worst situation is in Yakutia, where 60 fires are continuing.
In the Magadan Region there are ten fires, in Kamchatka, 14, in Amur Region, six and in the Khabarovsk Territory, four. 

Nearly 1,700 men and 230 vehicles are involved in the fire-fighting operations.

According to the Far East natural resources department fires have destroyed nearly 357,000 hectares of forest this year.
