Russia: Forest Fires in Russia

As many as 284 forest fires have been registered in Russia. Ninety-seven of them broke out in the past day and fire spread to over 5 900 hectares. Units of forest protection succeeded in extinguishing 43 fires the day they were spotted, Tass learned from Prirodnye Resursy national news agency of the Ministry of Natural Resources. More than 2 900 people fought the fires. Fifty-seven aircraft and helicopters and 435 units of equipment were used. The situation remains acute in forests of the Irkutsk region and Krasnoyarsk territory where some 189 forests are raging. The area to which fire spread on Wednesday exceeded 3 800 hectares. A major fire was registered in Kamchatka, at the timber-felling enterprise Melkovsky. Since May 15 fire damaged forests on an area of over 7 000 hectares. Forest fires continue in Buryatia, Khakassia, Altai, Tuva, Tomsk and Chita regions.
Altogether 6 365 forest fires were registered in Russia since last February and the area scorched by fire exceeded 117 000 hectares.
