JOHOR BARU: A trench will be dug around the Saleng dumpsite in Kulai to stop the methane gas fire which had been
burning for weeks. Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said the Kulai District Office would be asked to fill up the 26ha site with earthin a further bid to stop the fire. He said the gas posed no health danger to residents as combustion would result in the gas being converted to carbon dioxide, and the Fire and Rescue Department had also been placed on standby. He said the 12-year-old site was permanently closed in November due to overcapacity and a new site had been found at the 42nd kilometre of Jalan Kelapa Sawit in Kulai. He said scavengers who were searching for items which could be sold could have caused the fire.
“The district office had not used the normal procedures when closing the dumpsite. The site should have been filled with earth like the one in Jalan Tahana, and a way found to extract the gas to preventany occurrence of a fire,” he told reporters after attending the state Health Department Hari Raya gathering.
