The Bushfire Service was established by the Bushfire Act, 1936. It is primarily responsible for the suppression of wildfires. The website includes a list of bushfire brigades maintained by the Service and contacts for fire emergencies.
Charles Sturt University (CSU) International Fire Information Network (no longer in existence)
The CSU International Fire Information Network was a Special Interest Network (SIN). It is an online information service. The information concerns all aspects of fire science and management – including fire behavior, fire weather, fire prevention, mitigation and suppression, plant and animal responses to fire and all aspects of fire effects. The Fire Information Network consisted of two nodes: Australian National University (ANU) Node and Charles Sturt University (CSU) Node.

This webpage is a repository of CSIRO’s PyroPage bulletins, a bushfire science communication tool intended to provide bushfire practitioners with a rapid summary of critical new research results from CSIRO’s Bushfire Behaviour and Risks team. Each PyroPage is a short 1-2 page document issued soon after formal publication of an article in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

The Nature Conservation Council of New South Wales Inc. (NCC) has been actively promoting public education and awareness strategies for better Bush Fire Risk Management since 1984. The NCC has held conferences, seminars, workshops and produced a number of publications such as newsletters, proceedings, guidelines etc to communicate with the public. The NCC Bush Fire Management Program supports the Bush Fire Policy 1997 of the Nature Conservation Council by (a) nominating people who care about and understand the environment to become NCC representatives on Bush Fire Management Committees, Rural Fire Service Coordination Committee and the Rural Fire Service Advisory Council, (b) holding regular workshops for representatives, NCC member societies and the concerned public, and (c) producing policy, information, resources and encouraging networking to assist representatives and the community to understand the role of bushfire in the natural environment.

Northern Territory Fire Service

The Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service and Bushfires Council of the Northern Territory provide a response to fires across the Territory. The Fire and Rescue Service has 141 permanent staff working in regional centers such as Darwin, Alice Springs, Tennant Creek, Katherine, Nhulunbuy, Yulara and Jabiru, as well as 54 part-time Auxiliaries and 250 volunteers – the backbone of our rural brigades.

Queensland Rural Fire Service

Rural Fire Brigades are totally voluntary organizations established to provide assistance to the local community in rural fire management. They are a recognizable and legally constituted fire control organization whose volunteers join together for mutual protection for themselves and their property against the danger of fire. There are 44,000 volunteer Rural Fire Brigade members forming 1,653 Rural Fire Brigades which provide 93% coverage across the State, as indicated on the map. Rural Fire Brigades operate in areas not covered by an Urban Fire Service.
Satellite Remote Sensing Services, Landgate

The FireWatch map service provides emergency services personnel with an online map application to help in the management of bushfires over Australia. Datasets include fire near real-time hotspots from MODIS and NOAA imagery, Landsat and MODIS satellite imagery, burnt area maps since 1997, greenness images updated daily and weekly, lightning data and other useful map layers.
South Australian Country Fire Service (CFS)

The SA Country Fire Service cooperates with the SA Metropolitan Fire Service. These agencies protect the whole of the State from the effects of fire and other incidents, working closely with other agencies. The CFS website offers access to incident reports, a news archive, information on self-protection, as well as general information on factors influencing fire danger in South Australia.

Tasmania Fire Service (TFS)

The Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) is established under section 6 of the Fire Service Act 1979. The TFS is under the control of the State Fire Commission. Among other, the TSF website includes information on current fire restrictions (fire permit information, total fire ban information) and the current fire situation (current bushfires, incident summary, media releases, and public advice). The current bushfire situation report includes a daily fire map of Tasmania.
MyFireWatch

MyFireWatch provides bushfire location information in a quickly accessible form, designed for general public use. It is the result of a research collaboration between Landgate and Edith Cowan University. It provides useful map layers to assist people in the preparation and response to fire threats in their vicinity. Landgate also provides other fire monitoring tools within its FireWatch product suite, aimed at meeting the needs of fire management professionals and fire behavior scientists. These other tools, such as FireWatch-Pro and Aurora, can be accessed from http://firewatch.landgate.wa.gov.au.
Tropical Savannas Cooperative Research Center (CRC)

The Darwin-based CRC provides extensive information on its research programme Fire and savanna landscapes. This project examines the sustainable use of fire as a management tool in pastoral, indigenous, conservation and military land-use contexts. The Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) was established in 2002. The department provides advice and support to the Victorian Government. This website Fire and other Emergencies contains information and resources on how the Department of Sustainability and Environment manages fire on public land, including reducing the risk of fire, containing outbreaks of fire and how fire has shaped the environment. The website provides also near-real-time information on current wildland fire situations (Fires Today).

Forest and Rural Fire Research

Every year in New Zealand, around 2000 wildfires burn through some 7000 hectares of rural lands. Predicting where wildfires are most likely to break out, what fuels them and helps them burn, and how rural fire managers can be best prepared to fight them is the aim of the Forest and Rural Fire Research Programme.
