• TheGlobal Wildland Fire Network: Rationale and Introduction

This world map (click for enlargement) shows the delineation of the Regional Wildland Fire Networks. The vegetation types correspond to characteristic fire regimes in the regions that are described in the background documents on the regional network web pages.

The first four Regional Networks listed at the right side (South East Asia, Subsahara Africa, Balkan, Baltic) are officially linked to the ISDR-GFMC Wildland Fire Network. The other regional networks or networking activities are associated with the Global Network or in the negotiation phase for partnership.

Coordination of the Global Wildland Fire Network:

UN-ISDRWildland Fire Advisory Group and Global Fire Monitoring Center (GFMC)

In accordance with the decision of the Inter-Agency Task Force for Disaster Reduction (IATF/DR), UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN-ISDR), the Wildland Fire Advisory Group (WFAG) and the Global Wildland Fire Network (GWFN) were created in 2004 under the auspices of the ISDR. The WFAG represents an advisory body to the UN system aimed at providing technical, scientific and policy-supporting advice to the UN family through the ISDR and the IATF/DR, and acting as a liaison between the United Nations system, the Global Wildland Fire Network and its supporting partners.

The Global Fire Monitoring Center (GFMC) is mandated to serve as convener and secretariat of the WFAG and GWFN.

On 3-4 December 2004 the first meeting of the WFAG and GWFN was convened at the GFMC (Freiburg, Germany).

The volume “Towards Fire-smart Landscapes” was developed in 2021-2022 by Tropenbos and GFMC (N. Pasiecznik and J.G. Goldammer, eds.), with contributions of ca. 100 co-authors from tropical South America, Asia and Africa.
