Since the begin of the 1990s the Biogeochemistry Department (M.O. Andreae) with the Fire Ecology Research Group (J.G. Goldammer) and the Biofuel Burning Research Group (G. Helas), jointly with the Air Chemistry Department (P. Crutzen), have been working together in designing, coordination, organization and implementation of several international fire research campaigns under the umbrella of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP). The Fire Ecology Research Group served as co-chair of the scientific steering committee of the vegetation fire science component within the IGBP Core Project International Global Atmospheric Chemistry (IGAC) – the Biomass Burning Experiment (BIBEX) and was the host of the BIBEX Secretariat.
The scientific interests of the Research Groups of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry are expressed in the numerous scientific publications authored or co-authored by the four scientists.
