Central Asia Fire Management Consultation and Study Tour
(September 2005)


Initial discussions about the formation of the Regional Central Asia Wildland Fire Network were held at the “Conference on Forest Fire Management and International Cooperation in Fire Emergencies in The Eastern Mediterranean, Balkans and Adjoining Regions of the Near East and Central Asia” (Antalya, Turkey, 30 March – 3 April 2004) and the “Regional Central Asian Forest Congress “Forest Policy: Problems and Solutions” (Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic, 25-27 November 2004).

The next follow-up activity was a Regional Central Asia Fire Management Consultation and Study Tour which brought together wildland fire management specialists from Central Asia. The consultation was held in conjunction with the scientific conference “Forest and Steppe Fires: Ignition, Spread, Extinguishing and Environmental Consequences”(Irkutsk, Russian Federation, 5 – 11 September 2005). At the one-day consultation the meeting participants:

  • reported about the wildland fire situation in their countries
  • discussed mechanisms of regional cooperation in wildland fire science
  • prepared recommendations for bi-lateral and multilater agreements of cooperation in wildland fire management and emergency response
  • prepared recommendations for capacity building involving neighbouring countries
