Forest Fires in Chile

14 January 2015

On January 12, 2015, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured an image of a large wildfire burning in central Chile, to the west of Talca. Red outlines indicate hot spots where MODIS detected unusually warm surface temperatures associated with fire. Winds pushed the smoke plume north. The sensor also detected a smaller fire burning to the south of Santiago. As of January 14, the fire west of Talca appeared much smaller but was still burning.
