Current forest fires in Chile
14 January 2015
On January 12, 2015, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASAs Aqua satellite captured an image of a large wildfire burning in central Chile, to the west of Talca. Red outlines indicate hot spots where MODIS detected unusually warm surface temperatures associated with fire. Winds pushed the smoke plume north. The sensor also detected a smaller fire burning to the south of Santiago. As of January 14, the fire west of Talca appeared much smaller but was still burning.

The lower part shows several fires in Southern Chile. During these days, over 100 fires have ravaged through Chile, all of them are suspected to be accidental or intentional rather than natural, the Government of Argentina has sent reinforces for the fire brigades to fight the fires.
