The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board of Aqua satellite acquired these images of the fires in Central Chile and part of its burn scar on 07 January 2014.
In the natural-color image (top) no burn scar can be seen, however smoke is visible drifting west.
In the false-color image (bottom), unburned vegetation appears green, while unburned areas are red. Actively burning fires are orange.

In early December, bushfires started ravaging the hills surrounding Valparaiso, puting in danger hundreds of homes in the Chilean coastal city. Between December 2013 and January 2014 over 40 fires started and razed thousands of hectares due to high temperatures and high winds present in all the Regions affected. Red alert was given to five Regions.

This map shows land surface temperatures between 19 – 26 December 2013, compared to average temperatures for the same period from 2000 – 2012. Nearly the entire country of Argentina and a big part of Central and Southern Chile were much warmer than normal, with some locations more than 15°Celsius above average. This explains how prone were and are these areas to fires in the season 2014.
