Current forest fires in Portugal

Several wildfires burned in Portugal in late August 2013. The largest was in the Caramulo Mountains of central Portugal, where five firefighters lost their lives on August 30. The fires are outlined in red, and dense smoke was drifting west over the Atlantic Ocean. More than 31,000 hectares (77,000 acres) have burned in Portugal in 2013.

These fires have taken the life of a female and 3 male firefighters so far. Overwhelmed by the blazes, the Government of Portugal had to ask France and Spain for aid in the combat of the forest fires.

Fire in the Portuguese island of Madeira that forced to evacuate a hospital and houses, and needed the intervention of 130 firefighters.
