Pony Complex, Elk Complex and Beaver Creek Fires. Southern Idaho.
This map depicts fire activity as detected by MODIS on 19 August 2013. Shows fire and cumulative fire activity detected since the begining of the calendar year for the Great Basin East (Utah, Southern Idaho and Western Wyoming)

This picture was taken by an astronaut of the Expedition 36 crew on board of the International Space Station on August 18, 2013 with a digital camera using a 50 millimeter lens. It has been cropped and enhanced to improve contrast, and lens artifacts have been removed.

Within this mountainous region (the dark areas are all wooded), several fires produced extensive smoke plumes. The densest smoke appeared to be generated by a combination of the Little Queens and Leggit fires (within the Salmon River Mountains). This image shows the common pattern of westerly winds carrying smoke in an easterly direction, as seen during the wildfire season of one year ago.

Named fires—most ignited by lightning—had burned 53,000 acres of forest south of the Salmon River by August 20, 2013; the number would be significantly higher if unnamed fires were included. The Gold Pan fire, north of the Salmon River, had burned 27,000 acres. For a sense of scale, Gold Pan lies about 125 miles (200 kilometers) north of the Little Queens fire.

These images, taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra (upper) and Aqua (lower) satellites, shows fires burning in Idaho and Wyoming on morning (Terra) and afternoon (Aqua) of 16 August 2013.

The Elk Fire resulted from several lightning fires burning together on the night of 8 August, fuels are extremely dry and when combined with steep terrain, created plume dominated fire behavior. The Beaver Creek Fire was ignited by lightning Aug. 7 and is burning northwest of Hailey in the Sawtooth National Forest. It has burned 43,707.7 Ha (108,004 Acres). All the fires produced thousands of evacuations and damages to buildings and homes. (Source: InciWeb.org)
