Haze over India

Thick haze continued to linger over the northern Indus River Valley on 5 November 2009, continuing a week-long pattern. The haze may be a combination of smoke from agricultural fires, urban air pollution, and dust from the areas numerous deserts. Topography may be helping to concentrate the haze. The Sulaiman Range Mountains line the valley to the west, and the foothills of the Himalaya rise to the northeast.
A dense cluster of agricultural fires burning in northwest India filled the skies over much of India and Pakistan with smoke in late October and early November 2009. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASAs Aqua satellite captured this true-color image on 4 November. The fires, marked with faint red dots, are clustered in the upper right corner of the image. The smoke, which may be mingled with urban pollution and dust, seems to follow the course of the plant-lined Indus River to the Arabian Sea.
