In eastern Europe spring burning was underway on 29 April 2009, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite passed overhead and captured this image. Hundreds of fires (locations marked with red dots) were burning across the agricultural areas of Eastern Europe. Most fires can be attributed to acricultural burning, however, some of the fires are wildfires burning in different vegetation types.

Suppression of a large forest fire in Ghytomyr Natural Reserve (Central North of Ukraine) is going on

On 29 April 2009 a large forest fire occurred on the territory of Polesskiy Natural Reserve, Ghytomyr oblast, Ukraine, affecting a total area of 550 ha. Helicopters of the Ministry of Emergency of Ukraine made 17 water attacks during 29-30 April 2009. There are more than 151 firefighters, 28 fire trucks and MI-8 helicopters involved in fire suppression.
