Fires in the United States

21 July 2008

This GOES-12 satellite image taken at 0115 UTC on 18 July shows a long ribbon of SO2 with possible light ash that originated from the eruption of the Alaskan volcano Okmok on 12 July 2008. This SO2 band stretches over 2,200 miles. Also evident on this image is the large area of moderately dense smoke stretching from northern California to the Northern Plains as a result of the numerous fires along the West Coast.
