Fires in Southeastern Russia
Smoke from intense fires in southeastern Russia poured over the Sea of Okhotsk on 30 June 2008. This natural-color image of the fires (marked in red) is made from data collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensors on NASA’s Terra and Aqua satellites on 30 June 2008. The fires are affecting Amur, Khabarovsk, and southern Sakha Provinces in Russia’s Far East.

The high-resolution image provided above is at MODIS’ maximum spatial resolution (level of detail) of 250 meters per pixel.

Smoke from numerous fires burning in southeast Russia has moved over the Sea of Okhotsk as seen by this MODIS satellite image at 0215 UTC on 01 July 2008.

The Space Monitoring Information Support Laboratory provides extensive links to sites with satellite imagery for the Russian Federation, meteorological information as well as fire related images are accessible.

Fire situation report of the Aerial Forest Fire Protection Service of Russia (Avialesookhrana)

According to the wildfire situation report of 30 June 2008 a total of 152 fires affected 5,241 ha forested and 379 ha non-forested lands, 40 fires of them were reported as new fires. Through all of Russia  1,502  people, 53 aircraft,  257 bulldozers, tractors and engines have been involved in fire fighting. Since the beginning of the 2008 fire season a total of 19,364  fires affected 781,086 ha forested and 623,168 ha non-forested lands of the Forest Fund of Russia .

Most fires have been reported in the following regions:

  • Repablic Sakha (Yakutiya)- 38;
  • Amursk region – 28;
  • Khabarovsk region – 22.

There are large fires in following regions:

  • Repablic Sakha (Yakutiya)- 8 fires,burning area 6,550 ha;
  • Amursk region – 15 fires,12,019 ha.

One of the results of the first international fire science conference in the Russian Federation (1993) was the publication of a monograph on fire in boreal Eurasia, including some selected contributions on boreal North America. The literature cited in the monograph contains numerous publications which in many cases are not easily accessible. To facilitate literature search the bibliographical sources are provided by topic (chapter).
