Fires in Florida

15 May 2008

More than 100 homes were damaged or destroyed by a wildfire in the southern part of Palm Bay, Florida, in mid-May 2008. Dry conditions—possibly abetted by arsonists, according to news reports— created a fire emergency in the state over the weekend of 10 May, with more than a hundred fires breaking out. This image of two fires (outlined in red) in central Florida was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite on 13 May.
