Fires in Montana and Idaho

14 September 2007

More than a dozen large fires (some of them fire complexes that include more than one fire) were burning in Idaho and Montana on 12 September 2007, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite passed overhead and captured this image.

Fires (outlined in red) have been burning in these areas since late July. Fire activity has flared up and then died down periodically, and plumes of smoke have crossed the country to the East Coast off and on.

The large image provided above has a spatial resolution (level of detail) of 250 meters perpixel.
