Fires and Deforestation in the Amazon

As roads penetrate into the Amazon Rainforest, fires and deforestation follow. This image from5 August 2007, shows scores of fires burning along roads and at the edges of already cleared area of the Amazon in southern Para and northern Mato Grosso states in Brazil. The image and fire detections (marked in red) were captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite.
