Milford Flat Fire, Utah

The largest fire in Utah’s recorded history was around 329,000 acres as of11 July 2007, according to the morning report from the National Interagency FireCenter. In the previous 24 hours the fire grew nearly 18,000 acres. The blazewas racing through grass and brush, driven by wind gusts. Houses and businesses,a natural gas pipeline, and a geothermal power plant were threatened

This image of the fire was captured by the Moderate Resolution ImagingSpectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite on 10 July. Places around the perimeter of the massive fire that wereactively burning are outlined in red. The burn scar itself appears dark browncompared to the tan color of the dry grasslands surrounding it.

Consisting of sixfires, the complex was exhibiting extreme fire behavior, and had causedintermittent road closures and evacuations.

This image of the fire was captured by the Moderate Resolution ImagingSpectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terrasatellite on 10 July. Places where MODIS detected actively burning fire areoutlined in red. Smoke pools over the basin. Irrigated areas appear bright green, while natural vegetation on the mountains appears duller green.
