Forest Fire on Maui
In the last week of January 2007, a forest fire burned on the Hawaiian islandof Maui, scorching several hundred acres of state park land and forest reservesbefore it was contained. This image from January 26 from the Moderate ResolutionImaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onNASAs Terra satellite shows the fire (locationmarked in red) casting a long plume of smoke westward over the Pacific Ocean.According to news reports, the cause of the fire was not known.

This satellite image shows a plume of smoke coming from a brushand grassland fire near Waikola, Hawaii that has spread across 300 acres of landsince tuesday. Also very visible is the lava flow from the Pu’u’O’o vent of theKilauea volcano.
