FEMA OKs Funds For Puako Brush Fires

Honolulu, Hawaii — The Federal Emergency ManagementAgency on Monday approved funds to help fight the brush fire in Puako on the BigIsland.
The fire scorched more than 2,000 acres, threatened 200 homes and forced theevacuation of more than 400 people, officials said. The residents were allowedto return to their homes.
“This declaration is the first step that will enable state and localgovernments to apply for financial help,” FEMA Region IX AdministratorNancy Ward said.
The FEMA Fire Management Assistance Grant can pay up to 75 percent of thefirefighting costs.
A string of brushfires started between 3:20 a.m. and 4:15 a.m. on Sunday. Thefires appear to be intentionally set, authorities said.

Officials in Hawaii believe brush fires that burned along the coast of thestate’s largest island may be a case of arson.
Hundreds fled inland to escape the blaze, which has not yet reached homes orharmed anyone. But things could change, officials warned, if island breezeschanged only slightly.
Nine fires appear to have been set in dry grasses along coastal roads nearKamuela early Sunday, officials said. The evacuation order affected an estimated500 people. It is believed they were ignited in a coordinated effort, covering700 acres of land along the northwest portion of Honolulu. More than 60 firedepartments are involved in battling the fires.
