Several people were killed by wind-driven brush fires in northern Sicily in late August 2007. This image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite shows the island on 22 August 2007.

Places where MODIS detected actively burning fires are outlined in red. Smoke from fires in the Nebrodi Mountains blows north over the TyrrhenianSea.
