In northern Washington, several large fires were burning when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASAs Terra passed overhead on 7 September 2006. This photo-like image of the region shows the Tatoosh and Tripod Complexes, as well as the Cedar Creek, Flick Creek, and Tinpan Fires. Smoke had settled into the valleys of rivers and creeks that wind through the rugged mountains. Places where MODIS detected actively burning fire are outlined in red.
