July and August are the driest months of the year in central Brazil, and the savannah land around the nation’s capital is particularly prone to fires.

These images of fires burning in Brazil were captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra and Aqua satellite on 31 July. Places where MODIS detected actively burning fire are outlined in red.Smoke is drifting from many locations throughout the country and the burned landappears dark brown.

The high-resolution images provided above have a spatial resolution of 500 meters per pixel.
