A long plume of smoke from a wildfire in southern California crossed the Channel Islands and spread out over the Pacific Ocean on3 December 2006. This image of the Shekell Fire was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASAs Aqua satellite at 12:25 p.m. local (Pacific) time. Places where MODIS detected actively burning fire are outlined in red.

According to news reports, the fire was burning near the town of Moorpark, which is about 10 kilometers(about 6.2 miles) west of Simi Valley. The fire, which began early Sundaymorning, had destroyed several homes, and burned about 9,700 acres as of Mondaymorning, 4 December.
The high-resolution image provided above has a spatial resolution of 250 meters perpixel.

California/Baja: The most significant smoke producing fireduring the day was over far northwestern Baja, just south of San Diego County.Locally dense smoke was visible in the vicinity of this fire moving in awesterly direction off the west coast of Baja. A large mass of thin smoke withembedded patches of moderately dense smoke was visible off the coast of Baja andsouthern California. This was a combination of smoke from the northern Baja fireas well as from fires farther to the north in southern California around Venturaand southwestern San Bernardino Counties. The fires in Ventura and SanBernardino Counties only appeared to be emitting relatively thin patches ofsmoke which spread to the west.
