Fires in Victoria, Australia

19April 2006

In the forested mountains of Victoria’s Gippsland region, several fires were burning on 19 April 2006, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite passed over. Places where the sensor detected actively burning fires are marked in red. Plumes of bluish smoke drift southeastward over the Tasman Sea. The westernmost fire in the scene is burning west of the town of Dargo, and it was started by an abandoned campfire, according to news reports from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Website.
