The solid green expanse of the Amazon Rainforest is increasingly broken byroads and tracts of farmland. This image of Mato Grosso state in southern Brazilshows numerous fires (red dots) detected by the ModerateResolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) around the upper Xingu River.

In northern Mato Grosso, Brazil, land cover change from dense rainforest toroads and agricultural land is often achieved through fire. People also use fireto maintain agricultural and pasture land.
