News from the Country 04 April 2005:

Secretary of Environment, Max Puig, says technical analysis of forest fires indicates some were started intentionally. More than 20 people have been detained. Normally forest fires follow the direction of the wind, but some of the ones encountered were against wind direction. The DR had 90 fires in March and firefighters on average extinguished 3 per day. The Cordillera Central fire is now 70% – 80% extinguished. Puig said he could not dismiss the notion that ‘political hands’ may have been at work in setting fires. Read more in El Nacional.
