Fires in the Northern Rockies
Fires in the Northern Rockies
25 August 2005
As September approached, fires continued to burn in the Bitterroot Mountains along the border of Idaho and Montana, as well as in other National Forests in the two states. When this image of the area was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASAs Terra satellite on 29 August 2005, numerous large fires were billowing smoke to the north and east.
A line of clouds along the left edge of the image could be an indication of an approaching weather system, which was forecasted to bring some cool weather to the Northern Rockies. Active fire locations that MODIS detected are outlined in red. For more information about the fires in the Northern Rockies, read the daily situation report from the National Interagency Fire Center.
