East of the city of Ourense in northern Spain, fires were burning in the parched forests and woodlands on 7 August 2005. Fires continued in the tinder-dry landscapes of northern Portugal, particularly around the city of Porto. This image shows the region as it appeared during the afternoon (local time) overpass of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite on 7 August. Places where MODIS detected active fires are marked in red (Source: Earth Observatory).
