Along the southeastern margin of the Amazon Rainforest, people are creating islands of rainforest surrounded by farms andranches. Fire is a common land-clearing or land-management tool in the region, and numerous fires were detected by MODIS in the image and are marked with reddots.
This image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASAsTerra satellite was captured on 1 August 2005.The left image is a photo-like image in natural colours, while theright image has been enhanced by including MODIS observations of infraredlight. In the false colour scene, vegetation is bright green, clouds are lightblue, the burned area is magenta and water bodies and geographical features canbe seen more clearly.

Above the cluster of fires located at the upper Xingu river, a deep green forest island is surrounded by lighter green and tan areas of agricultural land. To the southwest of the smallerisland, a larger pocket of forest appears to be in the process of being isolated from the intact expanse of forest to thenorthwestif it has not been separated already.
