Hundreds of firefighters battle Perth blaze

Sydney – A bushfire burning out of control in the hills that flank Perth, the West Australian state capital, lit into houses on Tuesday and forced people to flee their homes.
More than 250 firefighters were battling a blaze amid 40-degree temperatures and strong winds.
State government spokesperson Nigel Higgs said the fire – the result of two deliberately lit blazes converging – had burned more than 10 000 hectares of national park and at least one house 35 kilometres south-east of Perth.
Last week, nine people died in a forest fire in South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula. – Sapa-dpa
