Fire sweeps forest in Heilongjiang

HARBIN, Oct. 18 (Xinhuanet) — A forestry center caught fire last Friday in northeast Heilongjiang Province.

By press time, more than 400 armed policemen have been dispatched to the Zhanhe Forestry Center to fight against the fire.

According to Wang Chuntai, head of the forest brigade of armed police troop in Harbin, the provincial capital, the forest fire was advancing at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour towards the Xingfu and Lixin forestry farms and threatening life and properties of more than 3,000 local people, when his men arrived at the scene.

After one night of endeavors, they managed to put the fire under control and maintained the safety of the two farms, he said.

Monitoring aircraft reported that the fire had three scenes. The fire on the Fendou Farm was fierce and expanding, he said, adding that dry, clear and windy weathers in these days made it difficult to extinguish the forest fire.

Cause of the accident is being investigated
