Several fast-moving wildfires have been nipping at the margins of Los Angelesin the third week of July 2004. The Moderate Resolution ImagingSpectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASAs Aqua satellitecaptured this image of the Crown Fire on July 21, 2004. The area outlined in redshows the area in which MODIS detected actively burning fire. The Crown Fire hadburned about 8,000 acres along the southern edge of the Mojave Desert in theAngeles National Forest as of July 21 (Source: EarthObservatory).
