The ModerateResolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS) captured this image of the Impassable One fire as swept through 38,000acres of timber and swamp land in the Osceola National Forest in northeastFlorida. The fire began as a prescribed burn on 2 March 2004, but slipped out ofcontrol, growing under windy conditions on 6 and 7 March. On 9 March 2004, about30 families in Taylor, Florida were forced to evacuate briefly before rainsstaunched the fire’s progress. As of 10 March 2004, 38,000 acres had burned, and the fire was 20 percent contained.

Fires Across Southern United States

(Image courtesy MODIS Rapid Response Team, NASA-GSFC)

This image of fires in the southern United States was captured on March 10, 2004, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite. Actively burning fires have been marked with red dots in Oklahoma (top left), Texas (bottom left), Arkansas (top center), Louisiana (bottom center), and (left to right across the rest of the image) Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.

Most of us don’t think of late winter as fire season in the United States, but according to the Southern Coordination Center for the National Interagency Fire Center, nearly 865,000 acres had been affected by fire in the Southern region as of March 14, 2004: 164 human-caused fires affected 7,800 acres; 12 lightning-caused fire affected 134 acres; and 968 prescribed fires (those set by land management agencies for natural resource management purposes) affected nearly 780,000 acres.

Fires, marked with red, are present in every state pictured: (top row to bottom row, left to right) Tennessee, North Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida.
