Dense smoke rises into the sky after the wind drove flames near the district of l’Estaque in Marseille, July 24, 2004.
Fanned by strong winds, the blaze has swept through 200 hectares of pine forest in the Marseille region of France.

Fires in Southern Europe

Fire season starts in southern Europe.
In Portugal villages and beaches were evacuated, the highway from Porto to Lissabon was closed for several hours.
420 residents and touriste were evacuated in Korsika.
Over 2000 Firefighters are mopping up a 2000 ha blaze near Marseille, France.
Dry and windy conditions are expected for the coming days.
