Fires in Mexico and Central America
On April 21, 2003, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite captured this image of fires burning across the Yucatan Peninsula and Central America. The fires, marked in red, are billowing thick smoke, which has pooled into the nooks and crannies of the rugged terrain. The smoke is stretching northward over the Gulf of Mexico.

Sigue incendio de varios manglares

Escuintla/.-Un fuego subterráneo sigue destruyendo los bosques del manglar del humedalManchón Guamuchal que se ubican en Retalhuleu, confirmaron ayer autoridades delConsejo Nacional de Areas Protegidas, Conap, de la región.
Martín Manuel Sánchez Pérez, técnico de manglares del Instituto Nacional deBosques, Inab, de Coatepeque, dijo que el área afectada supera las trescaballerías de manglar.
Para sofocar el fuego que destruye la reserva natural del lugar se unieron elInab, Conap, gobernación departamental de Retalhuleu y el Ministerio deAmbiente, los que han elaborado un plan para evitar que el fuego se propague aotros sitios, además de restaurar el área dañada, agregó Sánchez.
Brechas
Como es unincendio subterráneo, los bomberos y técnicos abrieron dos brechas en lafincas Las Ilusiones y en la parte sur de El Calvario.
Las autoridades ecológicas buscan la posibilidad de hacer otra brecha parasalvar una buena parte del bosque manglar en riesgo y evitar más daños allugar, explicó Mynor Cordón Rojas, gobernador de Retalhuleu.
Además, se debe desarrollar cuanto antes un seminario de información a loshabitantes y vecinos del lugar y encontrar la forma correcta de limpiar el áreay aprovechar la madera de los árboles tirados en la región afectada, agregóCordón.
Siguen llegando voluntarios que portan mochilas con agua en la espalda, quienesse internan entre los manglares se indicó.
Este humedal es uno de los más importantes a nivel mundial, porque ha sidodeclarado patrimonio natural internacional.

Duringthe last emergency in March 2003 the GFMC had forwarded the emergency situationreports to the UNEP-OCHA Joint Environment Unit, Emergency Services Branch,Environment Emergencies Section (EES), FAO, the German Foreign Office, Officefor Humanitarian Assistance, and the German Agency for Technical Cooperation(Germany and Guatemala). GFMC had provided information to FAO Guatemala aboutprocedures to initiatea request through OCHA. Meanwhile the FAO is negotiating with Guatemala on aTechnical Cooperation Programme (TCP) in fire management.
Inaddition the GFMC had contacted the WHO concerning humanitarian assistance withregards to smoke pollution.
