Widely Scattered Fires across CentralAfrica  Scores of fires continue to burn across the savannas andthe Sahel of central Africa. This true-color image from the ModerateResolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aquasatellite was captured on November 30, 2002, and shows active fire detectionsmarked with red dots. In the upper right hand quadrant, Lake Chad and itssurrounding wetlands make a green splash against the paler desert sands of theSahara

Right: Firesin West Africa  Widespread burning is underway in West Africa asthe continent’s burning pattern shifts from south of the equator to north. Theburning season peaks in southern Africa in late summer or early fall, only tobegin building in the areas between the southern edge of the Sahara and theequator. This true-color image of the widespread burning is centered on thecountry of Burkina and was captured by the ModerateResolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aquasatellite on December 1, 2002. Active fire detections are marked with red dots.
