Meteorological Stations

During the experimental stage in the 2001 fire season, hourly weather observations from about 420 World Meteorological Organization (WMO) stations were collected via the Canadian ANIK satellite (Belarus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Mongolia, Norway, Poland, Russian Federation, Sweden, and Ukraine). Stations in Slovakia, Czech Republic, northern China, Uzbekistan, and Kyrghyzstan are included to provide better data at the southern boundary of the region. Other stations have been added since 2001, with over 900 identified locations currently in the database, and over 800 confirmed to be active in 2020.
