Recovery teams assess bushfire impact on livestock

Australia — Recovery teams are pouring into the bushfire affected areas of Victoria, to help farmers assess damage to livestock.
During the December fires in the Gippsland and north-east regions, 1,077 animals were lost, including nearly 1,000 head of cattle.
Michael Boyd from the Department of Primary Industries says it is important to assess farms as quickly as possible.
“We have set ourselves the goal of getting to every property within 48 hours of the fire front passing,” he said.
“Our primary focus initially is to get around very quickly and assess any livestock to see whether or not they are likely to survive, whether they need some treatment or whether they are beyond treatment and we euthanase them.”
