GFMC: Urban Fires in the United States
On Tuesday 11 September 2001 the United States of America suffered severe urban fires caused by aerial attacks of kidnapped airplanes hitting the World Trade Center in New York and the Ministry for Defense (Pentagon) in Washington. The number of casualties is not yet known.

The following significant events were identified by Satellite Analysis Branch meteorologists and reviewed by the OSEI support team of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA):
NESDIS/OSEI NOAA-12 POES AVHRR LAC satellite image, 12 September 2001.
The image shows the smoke plume drifting south from the burning
World Trade Center fires, depicted by NOAA AVHRR.
This true-color image was taken by the Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) aboard the Landsat 7 satellite on September 12, 2001, at roughly 11:30 a.m. Eastern Daylight Savings Time.
